When someone mentions the UAE desert, what words spring to mind? The chances are that ‘dry’ is probably high on your list. The Czech Republic Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai aims to turn this situation on its head with an innovative system that produces water from the air using nothing but sunlight – one of the desert’s most abundant resources.
Developed by a team of scientists from Czech Technical University in Prague, the Solar Air Water Energy Resources (S.A.W.E.R.) system operates autonomously, without the need for a generator or a connection to the electricity grid.
Simply transport a S.A.W.E.R. container to a remote, off-grid location by truck or helicopter, and your taps will be running within 24 hours of unloading.
The brains behind the solar-powered technology have created two types of system: a larger version that can generate up to 500 litres of water per day and a portable version that can generate up to 100 litres of water per day.
Water produced by S.A.W.E.R. can even be tailored for specific uses – whether it’s for consumption by humans and animals, or for irrigation to turn desert sand into fertile land
S.A.W.E.R. will be formally introduced to the public at Expo 2020. The Czech Republic, which this month performed a groundbreaking ceremony at its plot in the Sustainability District, is even planning to use the system to grow olive and palm trees during the World Expo.
So, who knows? If the scientists behind S.A.W.E.R. succeed in their mission to bring water to even the harshest desert environments, a new world of opportunities could open for those who live and work in the driest places on the planet.
