Building excitement: the Expo site takes a major leap forward

Construction is complete on the Thematic Districts, offering an evocative glimpse into the good times that await at Expo 2020

In a major step closer to delivering a world of excitement, discovery and innovation, Expo 2020 has completed construction on its three Thematic Districts.

Inspired by Expo’s subthemes, Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability, the petal-shaped districts include 86 buildings that will used for some Country Pavilions, food and beverage outlets, retail and more.

Constructed by UAE firm Al Futtaim Carillion, the Thematic Districts also include flora indigenous to the UAE and feature innovative lighting, smart shading, waterways and plenty of areas for public rest and relaxation.

A calendar of live events and performances will take place within the Thematic Districts to wow an average of 150,000 visitors expected at Expo 2020 on each of its 173 days. Designed by Hopkins and Partners, the buildings are designed to meet LEED Gold certification standards, the global benchmark of sustainable construction.

The project milestone comes after more than 100 million working hours have been recorded on the Expo site. The buildings will now be fitted out.

Post-event, the Thematic Districts will live on as part of a vibrant commercial and residential development called District 2020, part of Expo 2020’s aim to raise the bar for sustainable development.

The next major construction milestone on the Expo site will be the completion of Al Wasl Plaza, the site’s iconic centrepiece.
