A quicker, cleaner and smarter way to refuel cars

Solar power and artificial intelligence help drive ENOC’s service station of the future at Expo 2020

Filling up with fuel is set for a sustainable and technological makeover, thanks to ENOC’s new Ghaf tree-inspired service station to be unveiled at the Expo 2020 Dubai site.

The service station will be built on an exoskeleton of the Ghaf tree structure, supporting a cutting-edge, solar-powered carbon fibre canopy. The UAE’s national tree is renowned for its resilience to harsh weather conditions, and is the symbol for the Year of Tolerance in 2019.

The canopy, three times lighter than steel and capable of generating 30 per cent more energy than typically required to run a service station, is just one feature that makes the Ghaf tree service station the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certified station in the region.

Wind turbines and waste water recycling will help create alternative energy, while artificial intelligence, data analytics and sensors will cut queueing times, creating a refuelling experience that will be cleaner, quicker and a model for smart and sustainable cities of the future.

Paul Dwan, Director – Partnerships, Expo 2020 Dubai, said: “With the Ghaf tree service station, ENOC will create the future of their industry and make a significant contribution to sustainability and mobility, two key subthemes for Expo 2020.”

His Excellency Saif Humaid Al Falasi, Group CEO, ENOC, said: “As the integrated energy partner of Expo 2020, we envisioned a concept that is representative of how we have incorporated cutting-edge technologies and digital transformation to pave the way for a new generation of service stations in the country and the wider region.”

The Ghaf tree service station will serve the entire Expo 2020 fleet during the six months of the next World Expo from 20 October next year. Afterwards it will live on in the future city of District 2020, supporting Expo’s aim to build a lasting and sustainable legacy.
